Pitch Black - Reentry
Historically, discovery always came at a cost. Sometimes that cost was high. Adventurers and explorers from all ages had lost their lives. But every time Pitch looked at the Earth from orbit, he was sure discovery didn’t kill people; negligence did. Or overconfidence. Maybe apathy. But not discovery. Discovery had a different cost: change.
The Giant Panda—virtually unknown before the Han dynasty—remains a unique species with an unclear genetic history. Westerners didn’t learn of the panda’s existence until 1869, and, in fact, no Chinese drawings or paintings of this distinctive creature exist prior to the 20th century.
Panda Bears From Mars
My first novel was originally titled The Dead Badge of Courage. One of the protagonist’s mentors was General Ulysses S. Grant, and the antagonist was a former Union soldier who blamed Grant for his eventual death. The Battle of the Wilderness (seen in this 1887 Lithograph by Kurz & Allison from the Library of Congress) features in the backstory.
